The Battle of Shaho
The major Battle of Shaho was fought between 170,000 Japanese troops and 210,000 Russian troops. It was a land battle fought along the China Far East Railway, north of Liáodōng, Manchuria. In October 1904, the Russian armies attacked through the mountains to the east of Liáodōng, slowly gaining ground against the Japanese made up of the 1st Army commanded by General Kuroki Tametomo, the 2nd Army commanded by General Oku Yasukata, and the 4th Army commanded by General Nozu Michitsura. On the night of October 10, 1904, General Oyama ordered a Japanese counter offensive which not only halted the Russian advance, and it forced the Russians to retreat.
