Consequences
The Treaty of Portsmouth was a success. There were many consequences that came with the treaty. The point of view of both countries changed. The peace treaty was able to serve its purpose: to end the Russo-Japanese War and create peace between Japan and Russia. However, the treaty did not last. In World War I, Russia and Japan were once again enemies.
Japan
The delegates had left Portsmouth wanting more than they had gotten, and many citizens in Japan felt that they deserved more. Riots broke out in Japan. After winning every battle during the war, Japan became a World Power. This marked the first time that an Asian power had beaten a European power during the imperialistic period when the Europeans believed that they were superior. As time went on, Japan’s imperial ambitions in the Far East increased. Japan had gained materials required by Japanese industries from the Manchurian and Korean land. This helped the Japanese develop a strong economy. Japan was changing fast and soon became a very strong country.
Russia
With the loss of every battle in the war, Russia lost all of their land in the Far East. Russia was also forced to give one of their strategic railways to Japan. Along with their land, Russia lost their important title. Russia was no longer the big, strong country that many people feared. When the delegates returned, the citizens of Russia weren’t happy with the outcome of the treaty, this was the beginning of a reign of unhappiness that later turned into the 1917 Russian Revolution and the final push towards the creation of the communist Soviet Union .
USA
The signing of the peace treaty was a remarkable event that turned the United States into a World Power. Before the treaty, the United States was isolated from the rest of world, not saying much, because most of the talking was done by the European powers. This was the turning point in American and World history. Theodore Roosevelt’s actions were a success. He was able to bring two countries to peace with each other. For his honorable actions, Roosevelt was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize.
China and Korea
Korea had lost most of its land to Japan, and although China was given back most of Manchuria, Japan was still in control of the Liáodōng Peninsula. The Chinese government had to accept the unfair terms of the treaty and the humiliation; this showed that the Chinese government was weak and corrupt. This is a direct push towards the Chinese revolutionary movement.
